NEW USER HELPFUL HINTS!
STEP #1: Always make a copy of your master.
For 1 disk drive, at the prompt :\>DISKCOPY A: A: <ENTER>
For 2 disk drives, at the prompt :\>DISKCOPY A: B: <ENTER> or
:\>DISKCOPY B: A: <ENTER>
-------------------------------STEP #2: If your floppy disk is in drive A, change to the A drive
by typing A: <ENTER>
STEP #3: Now type DIR/P to view the files on that disk.
STEP #4: For instructions about the program, look for files with
an extension of 1) DOC or
2) TXT
Also, look for README files.
These are the files which will start the program.
4) What is a Filename?
----------------------
A filename is the name of a file. A filename can be from one to eight
characters in lenght. Also filenames can have an extension added to them by
first placing a period (.) and up to three characters. For example, a complete
filename could be "Employees.exe".
*** Here are some important Filenames Extensions to remember. ***
A. Files with an extension of COM and EXE:
-------------------------------------------
These are "Executable Programs" files. By this we mean that the programs
on these files can be executed straight from the DOS prompt or by simply
typing the file name. For example to run "Employees.exe" just type
Employees - press enter -.
B. Files with an extension of BAT:
-----------------------------------
These are "Batch Programs" files. The programs on these files can also be
executed from the DOS commands (COPY, TYPE, DIR, etc.) Therefore, when you
execute or run a file with a .BAT file extension, ALL the commands are run
one after the other in a batch, and often supply additional information
about the main program. For example to run "Employees.bat" just type
Employees - press enter -.
PS. On several disks, you will find this file: INSTALL.BAT This will install
a program for your specific computer system and will ask you specific questions
such as: 1) What kind of monitor do you have, Color Y/N, etc.
C. Files with an extension of BAS:
-----------------------------------
These are programs written in BASIC. Because BASIC is a programming language,
BASIC programs (files with a .BAS file extension) need to be run through a
BASIC interpreter(a program that allows BASIC program to work on your computer)
** Here's how to run a BASIC program on a floppy disk **
For example, to run a file called "Employees.bas", you would first insert your
basic interpreter disk with BASICA or GWBASIC on it in drive A. Then you need
to see the list of filenames on that program (this is called looking at the
DIRECTORY). To do so, simply type DIR and look for the filename BASICA or
GWBASIC followed by a file extension of .COM or .EXE. Now run BASIC by typing
the proper file name. After BASIC is loaded (you will see an OK above the
flashing cursor), remove the disk from your A drive, and insert the disk with
the BAS program on it. (For example, "Employees.bas", and type the word
RUN EMPLOYEES - press enter -.
D) Files with an extension of DOC and TXT:
-------------------------------------------
These files are not programs, but are text files that provide information
about the program. They are usually messages, instructions, or manuals for
you to read in order to help you run and use the program. Text files can have
a variety of different extensions or none at all, like: README, MANUAL,
PROGRAM.DOC and READ.1ST
However, the most common extensions are: .TXT and .DOC. To look at a text file
on your computer screen (for example, the text file "Employees.txt" or
"Employees.doc" you would need to type the work TYPE and the complete filename
including its file extension. Example: TYPE EMPLOYEES.TXT or TYPE EMPLOYEES.DOC
- press enter -.
PS. If the text file is long, it will scroll on the screen too fast for you
to read. In order to pause the scrolling, press and hold down the CTRL key
and press the S key.
NOTE: To print a text file like "Employees.txt" simply type the word COPY,
the complete filename with its extension file and PRN. Example: COPY EMPLOYEES.
TXT PRN - press enter -.
********************************************************************************
* FOR SECURITY, ALWAYS MAKE A DISKCOPY OF THE ORIGINAL PROGRAM BEFORE STARTING *
********************************************************************************
5. How to get started with a new program? For example, the program disk is
called "Employees".
A. FLOPPY DISK USERS:
----------------------
1- Insert your DOS disk in drive A. Turn on your computer. It will now boot
(ready itself for use by reading the information on your start up disk.)
2- Now you may be asked for the date and time, and the screen should show the
"A:\>" prompt.
3- Remove your DOS disk from drive A, and insert the disk called "Employees".
4- Now you should make a discopy of your new program called "Employees". At
the "A:\>" type DISCOPY A: A: - press enter -. Now remove the original
disk "Employees" and insert a blank formatted* disk, - press enter -.
There you have it, a spare copy of "Employees". Put away your original
disk called "Employees", but keep the spare one in drive A, and continue
the steps.
5- Now you need to see the list of files in the directory. To do so, type
DIR or DIP/P (if the list is very long), and determine what type of
files are on your program disk by following the above steps outlined in
FILENAME EXTENSIONS TO REMEMBER.
B. FOR HARD DRIVE SYSTEMS:
---------------------------
1- Turn on your computer WITHOUT a disk in any of your floppy drives. After
DOS boots up, you should then see "C>". NOTE: If you ended up in a
different program than DOS, please exit to DOS. Your screen should show
"C:\>" or "C:\DOS".
2- Insert the disk called "Employees" in drive A.
3- Now we want to make a new directory for the "Employees" disk called
Employees. To do so, at the "C:\>" type MD\EMPLOYEES - press enter -.
4- Then, once the directory is made type CD\EMPLOYEES - press enter -.
5- Now type A: - press enter -. At the "A:\>" type COPY *.* C: - press enter.
This copies everything from disk "Employees" in drive A, to the new
directory created called Employees in the hard drive.
6- Now remove the original disk from drive A, and run your program from the
new created directory called Employees. To do so, at the "A:\>" type C:
- press enter -.
7- Now that you are in the Employees directory, type DIR or DIR/P (if the
list of filenames is very long) to see the the list of filenames, and
determine what types of files are on your program disk by following the
above steps outlines in FILENAME EXTENSIONS TO REMEMBER.
********************************************************************************
* * ALWAYS FORMAT YOUR BLANK FLOPPY DISKS BEFORE COPYING ON THEM * *
* (Please refer to your DOS manual for specific steps) *
* *
* WARNING: When you format a disk, any of its previous existing information *
* will be destroyed! *

PLEASE REMEMBER to register with the author if you like, and intend to
regularly use any shareware program. This is the only support
and financial assistance they get for their long hours of work.
By registering, many authors will supply you with professional-
ly bound manuals, free updates, and most important "telephone
support" (up to one year in some cases). Also, it enables these
professional programmers to bring you more "Shareware" software
on a "TRY-BEFORE-YOU-BUY" basis, which are much cheaper than
any commercial software!
THANK YOU.
